Hello. I need ideas about what crops will flourish in a yard that has mainly filtered light. Also, how do I control slugs that seem to love my mustard greens! Thank you.

Thanks for your question! I happen to know that you’re from Louisiana, in Zone 8, and the LSU Department of Agriculture has a planting guide specifically for your region. To find what grows in the shade you’ll have to look at the plant profiles, but the information can be found here. There are a number of ways to deter Slugs. Diatomaceous Earth, Wood Ash, dried and crumbled Egg Shells, a person can also partially bury a can of cheap beer (about half full), and the slugs should be drawn to it and will drown. One could also try putting a small bowl of cat food into a larger bowl with beer in it, forming a moat around the cat food bowl. That could also entice them. One could also put a board on the ground near the plants, which would be an attractive hiding space for slugs, and then they could be collected, or squished on the spot, and the slime from previous slugs will attract more. Just make sure that, if you squish them, you’re not shooting slug eggs all over the place…not helpful! I hope this helps a little bit, and may give you some ideas. Good luck!
